How do I remove the dash cluster on my 2005 Silverado?

Be sure to first set the emergency brake and next disconnect your battery.

To remove the instrument cluster on a 2005 Chevy Silverado you must first disconnect the negative battery cable. If there is any chance of an air bag deploying you must put on safety glasses.

You must tilt down the steering wheel, turn signal lever and lower dash panel to access the screws that hold the cluster in place. After the screws are removed you will need to pull it out and disconnect all of the electrical connectors.

Can I drive my truck without the instrument cluster?

You can drive a vehicle without a working instrument cluster, but you won't have any information on your speed or fuel level. You may also be unable to keep track of the temperature inside your car if it gets too hot or cold because there won't be any information about that in your instrument cluster.

How do you know if your dash cluster is bad?

The easiest way to determine if your instrument cluster needs to be replaced is for it read "Service Engine Soon" and/or the Oil Life Monitor reads 0%.

The oil life monitor is driven by an internal counter that turns over once the engine starts. There are some other things that cause the "service engine soon" light to be on but 99.9% of the time it's because your instrument cluster is bad.

Where is the instrument cluster fuse?

The instrument cluster fuse is also known as the Fuel Pump Trip Circuit Fuse. It's under the hood on the drivers side of the engine compartment in a 2005 Chevy Silverado. Components that may cause the check engine light to turn on include:

1) Dead or dying gas cap. The OBDII connects to the fuel tank door and uses this as a ground to operate. If your gas cap is bad and not holding pressure or securely attached it will create problems with this system. Replace with OEM GM parts only.

2) Corroded/dirty terminals and wiring. This includes the connections at the OBDII and the fuel filler door (fuel pump trip). Clean with electrical contact cleaner or dielectric grease.
