    FAQ

    2005 Chevy Trailblazer Instrument Cluster

The Chevy trailblazer instrument cluster includes a speedometer, tachometer, fuel level, and engine temperature. (some models may be different, check with your specific model before buying).

The instrument panel is installed in the dash of your chevy trailblazer and helps you to see your vehicle's performance during operation.

It also provides information about your vehicle's engine, battery, water temperature, and more. Do not drive with a faulty or non-functional instrument panel as it can cause you to become distracted or even break down completely.

Many of these problems can be avoided if you check for warning signs early on and replace the faulty part before it causes more damage.

It is always better to be safe than sorry.

What causes the instrument cluster to stop working?

    - Vehicle is in an accident

    - The speedometer is not wired properly

    - There is a problem with the speedometer cable

    - There is a problem with the sensor that measures the vehicle's speed

    - There is a problem with the gauge that measures the fuel level

    - The instrument cluster has an electrical problem

    - The car's battery is not charged or it needs to be replaced

There are many possible causes for an instrument cluster to stop working. One of the most common reasons is due bad solder from the extreme heat or cold. If the instrument cluster is not working, the first thing you should check is the fuse. If the fuse is blown, then it will need to be replaced.

Another possibility is that one of the needles is stuck and needs to be reset. If the needles are not working properly then it can be from bad stepper motors.

Can you drive with a bad cluster?

Yes. You can drive the vehicle with a bad instrument cluster, but it is not recommended.

You will get no speedometer, tachometer, fuel level, temperature, or other needed readings. Without these gauges, it is very difficult to know if you are above or below the speed limit, and what temperature that engine oil needs to be changed.

You won't know what's going on with your car unless you can check it on your dashboard, so you have to be concerned about the prospect of it breaking down while you're driving down the road.

If you suspect you have a bad cluster, we recommend turning your car off, unplugging the battery for 10 minutes, plugging it back in, and turning the car on. This way, the car is set back to factory settings.

If this doesn't work, you may need a repair service or replace the entire cluster.

Can you replace the instrument cluster?

Yes. There are two options for replacing your Chevrolet Trailblazer instrument cluster yourself or having it done by a professional repair shop.

You can replace it yourself if you are good with cars and have a lot of patience.

The cost to replace it yourself will be around $250 for parts and an hour or two of your time.

This is the cheaper option, but you run the risk of ruining your car and possibly causing more damage if you do not know what you are doing.

For around $500, you can have a professional service shop replace your trailblazer instrument cluster for you.

How much does it cost to replace an instrument cluster?

If you are having a professional service shop do it, they usually charge between $400-$500.

This is the most expensive option, but it is relatively quick and easy for them.

If you are doing it yourself, the cost will be around $250 for parts plus an hour or two of your time. You save money because you don't have to pay someone to install it for you.

Why is my dash cluster not working?

There are many different reasons why your instrument cluster will not turn on.

The first thing that you should try is unplugging the car, waiting 10 minutes, and then plugging it back in. This resets the car's computers to factory settings, which can have positive effects on issues like this.

If this doesn't work, you need to get your car's electronics looked at by a professional service shop or technician.

It is likely something like a short, blown fuse, or bad wire that needs to be fixed by an expert in order for your car's electronics to function properly again.

But if you are good with cars and have experience working with car electronics, you can try to fix the issue yourself.

What are the symptoms of a bad instrument cluster?

You will get various symptoms depending on what area of the car's electronics is malfunctioning.

If your dashboard displays are not working properly, you will not get any speedometer, fuel level, temperature, or other readings.

This is because the power to your cluster comes through your dashboard displays.

If they are not working, your cluster will not work either.

You also might have issues with the lights or gauges inside of the instrument cluster.

If this is the case, you will have to inspect each gauge or light individually to see if it is working properly or not and replace light bulbs and gauges if needed.

Instrument clusters can also have issues with the car's computers.

If this is the case, you will get a "Check Engine" light on your dashboard which signals that there is a problem with your car.

You can get different error codes depending on the issue, but you will have to take it to a repair shop for diagnosis at a nominal fee.

How do you know if your dash cluster is bad?

One of the easiest ways to tell if your cluster is bad is by testing it.

First, unplug the battery and plug it back in to reset the car's electronics.

If this doesn't work, try checking if your dashboard lights up by turning on your headlights.

You can also try turning on your hazard lights to see if they come on.

If all of the dashboard lights are working, but you get no readings from the cluster, then you have a bad circuit.

If nothing happens when you turn on your car or if all of the dashboard lights are working, then you have a bad cluster.

Where is the fuse for the instrument cluster?

If you need to replace a fuse, it is best that you know where the fuse box is located before getting started. The Chevrolet trailblazer fuse box is located in the engine bay, which is easy to access.

Open up your hood and look underneath on the driver's side of the vehicle to find the fuse box. If you don't know what side of the car is the driver's side, check your owner's manual. There should be a diagram of the engine bay so you know which side is which.

It will also show you where everything is located in the engine bay. Some fuse boxes also have a diagram of which fuses are for what in the inside cover, so make sure to check there too.

Does a used instrument cluster need to be programmed?

Used instrument clusters do not need to be programmed unless they originally came out of another car make or model.

Then the cluster would need to be calibrated in order for it to work correctly.

If your new used instrument cluster comes from a Chevrolet trailblazer, it should not need to be programmed.

How do you know if you have a bad cluster?

In most cases, you can understand that you have a bad cluster by looking at it.

If the screen is cracked, the inside lights are not working, or the gauges like the fuel gauge are not functioning, then you know that your cluster is bad.

Power loss is also a sign that your instrument cluster is most likely bad.

If the screen only has a few segments that are illuminated or if some of the lights will not turn off, this is also a sign that you need to get your instrument cluster fixed.

Stepper motors are used to control the position of your dashboard needle.

If you hear a clicking or ticking sound when you turn on your car but everything appears normal, then you have a bad stepper motor and you need to search for a local store or online automotive website to request new stepper motors.

A clicking or ticking sound is going to be an indication that your instrument cluster most likely will need to be replaced.

If your needle only moves when you turn on the car, then this is another sign that you have a bad cluster.

Is there a way to test the instrument cluster?

One of the easiest ways to test the trailblazer instrument cluster if you have a power loss issue is to change the battery.

Normally, you would expect this to fix your problem, but if it doesn't, then you should end up getting a new instrument cluster.

    What controls the gauge cluster?

If you have a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer, it's important to know what the instrument clusters look like and how it functions.

The instrument cluster is where you get all of your readings and information about how the vehicle is running.

The gauge cluster is controlled by a computer and it receives information from the vehicle's sensors.

When you start your car, the ABS light will typically turn on to let you know that is working.

Once your Chevy trailblazer warms up, the instrument cluster will go through a series of tests to make sure all of the gauges are in working order.

If you have a bad instrument cluster, then your ABS light will typically stay on.

This is because your ABS light will turn on whenever one of the sensors fails.

The sensors are one of the most common problems with instrument clusters.

If you find that your ABS light is on, then it would be best to get your vehicle checked out and see if there's a problem with any of the sensors.

It might need a simple repair service or you might need a replacement instrument cluster.

Is there a fuse for the gauge cluster?

Yes, The fuse for the gauge cluster is in the underhood fuse box. This is located to the left of the steering wheel and it's below the driver's side fuse box.

It's the smaller of the two fuse boxes and you should find a 20amp fuse that is labeled as "Instrument Panel".

Can you reset the instrument cluster?

Yes, the best way to reset the instrument cluster is by disconnecting and reconnecting your battery.

This will allow all of the electrical components inside the instrument panel to reset and it will get rid of any memory that is causing your problem.
