Throttle Response Controller

What is throttle response?

Throttle response is the time, usually measured in milliseconds (ms), it takes throttle input to elicit an output in terms of engine speed.

The faster the throttle response, the less time it takes to reach a higher engine speed (i.e., revving). This gives you access to RPM faster.

Excessive throttle sensitivity can be dangerous because it may cause unintended acceleration.

A common example of this is dump truck operators who are pulling heavy loads and accidentally tapping on the gas pedal causes their vehicle to take off quickly accelerating into the truck in front of them.

The throttle sensitivity controller is used in cars to help increase the RPM faster so that vehicles can accelerate easier.

Throttle Response Controller

Why throttle response matters?

Besides being a safety concern, throttle sensitivity has a major impact on the comfort and feel of the vehicle. A very sluggish throttle response may feel weird - the vehicle feels either too slow or too jerky. Further, rapidly changing acceleration can be uncomfortable for passengers in

Throttle response, why we need it

Vehicle stability is a key requirement for safe driving. A significant determinant of vehicle stability is the control over engine power and transmission engagement. In order to ensure that a driver can quickly reduce engine speed if necessary, modern vehicles usually have immediate access to full engine power by pressing the throttle pedal to the floor. If a driver accidentally presses this pedal or it is pressed by accident, the vehicle will accelerate rapidly towards the car in front which may lead to an accident.

This situation is exacerbated if brake application takes more time because of wet/slippery roads, low friction surfaces, longer stopping distances, and more, compared with the time it takes to press the throttle pedal.

The throttle sensitivity controller prevents unintended acceleration in vehicles by allowing the driver to press the pedal only when necessary. For example, if a car is running in cruise control mode and the driver wants to accelerate, he/she must press the pedal. However, if the car is stopped at a red light and the driver wants to go, pressing the pedal is enough.

Lastly, the throttle sensitivity controller enhances the comfort of driving because the car responds immediately to throttle input without hesitation.

Throttle sensitivity controller (and its working principle) is often used for dump truck

It is necessary to design a controller that can reduce engine power based on the driver's input according to the following specifications.

  1. The controller should be capable of reducing engine power regardless of vehicle speed.
  2. The maximum reduction should not exceed 10%.
  3. The reduction should take effect within 0.2 seconds of the brake pedal is released, and no later than 1 second.
  4. Design Approach. The design approach adopted for this controller is to measure the time it takes for throttle pedal input to elicit an engine speed greater than 50 RPM, which is the engine speed at idle. If this time is less than 1 second, then the throttle sensitivity controller will be activated and reduce engine power proportionally.
  5. Standard practice is to use a proportional-integral (PI) controller to adjust the throttle sensitivity. At first, the PI controller will increase or decrease power so that engine speed is gradually brought to or reduced from idle, at a programmed rate of acceleration/deceleration.
  6. This approach is not suitable for the throttle sensitivity controller because the controller requires the engine speed to change very quickly. The programming of this controller would require making assumptions about the shape of the response curve, which is not accurate enough.
  7. Instead, the throttle sensitivity controller uses a simple feed-forward control mechanism with an on/off switch that is equivalent to pressing the brake pedal. The on/off switch is placed between the throttle sensor and the engine controller, instead of directly in front of the accelerator control.

What does a throttle response controller do?

The throttle response controller adds a delay between the moment the driver presses the gas pedal and when engine power is actually applied. This delay usually ranges from 0.5 to 2 seconds depending on the programmed setting in cruise control systems, but it can be much longer if necessary.

This responsiveness in throttle control has been associated with improved safety because it gives the driver more time to apply the brakes without the vehicle accelerating. This safety benefit has been largely supported by many studies, including one in 2012 that analyzed data from a comprehensive naturalistic driving study conducted by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI).

Eliminate throttle lag from your gas pedal.

The primary cause of the delay is that manufacturers purposely set the lag based on the foot position.

When you step on the accelerator in most cars today there's a momentary lag before power kicks in because ECU needs some air volume. This means that when you step on the gas pedal, there's a slight delay in throttle response.

To eliminate throttle lag from your gas pedal and experience a smoother and faster ride, get yourself a throttle response controller! Get on the road or on dirt in a matter of minutes with this effective and affordable device that can be easily installed on your car, truck, or boat.

A throttle response controller is safe to use with any vehicle, but it is most popular with vehicles that are equipped with Cruise Control or traction control.

Throttle response controllers will customize your gas pedal so that accelerator inputs are progressively mapped to engage the throttle. This means you'll no longer have to accommodate for a delayed reaction when you press the throttle pedal and it will make your gas pedal response much faster and smoother.

There are many throttle response controllers in the market with the same control/response and you just need to choose the best product or model that will be worth the money you will spend.

Most of the product model comes with a 1-year warranty and without knowing you might purchase a lesser quality product so it will be wise to get one with a 3-year warranty like ShiftPower Throttle Response Controller.

Throttle controller

Throttle controllers are designed to change the intensity of engine braking in Accelerator Pedal-to-Throttle Actuator (APTA) systems.

APTA systems are present in modern fuel injection engines and are used to change engine speed according to the driver's demand.

And if you are serious about getting rid of your problems like throttle lag, gas pedal response, or products throttle sensitivity then we recommend throttle response controllers.

ShiftPower Throttle Response Controller is the perfect toggle-style throttle controller that comes with a 3-year warranty.

Throttle controller pros and cons

This will not give your more horsepower but will allow you to adjust the lag or pedal throttle response. This will allow you to accelerate up to speed much faster.

The disadvantage of using a throttle controller is that you may get a low-quality product that malfunctions while you're driving and needs to be replaced. Because most throttle controllers come with just a 1-year warranty. This can be avoided by purchasing one that has at least a 3-year warranty.

The good thing is that you will be able to use your car's acceleration in the most efficient way possible so your vehicle will run perfectly without any problems at all and the best part is you can adjust your pedal with a BlueTooth connectivity app and customize it with different modes.
