How does an instrument cluster work?

This is a very interesting topic, and it's worth taking some time to go over the basics. The instrument cluster works as follows:

1. the ECU sends a signal to an instrument about what information is needed

2. this information is sent through a so-called "backbone" which is a bunch of wires connecting the ECU to all instruments (speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, etc)

3. the instrument receives information from the ECU and displays it to the driver (displays speed on the speedometer, displays rpm on the tachometer, etc)

4. the instrument sends a signal back to the ECU, telling it if everything is ok (needle on the speedometer doesn't go beyond a certain limit) or if something is wrong (e.g. low fuel level in the gas tank, the engine temperature is too high, etc)

5. the ECU processes the signal and takes action if needed. For example, if the engine is overheating, it will make sure to turn on/off the coolant pump to keep the engine temperature within a certain range.

All of this happens incredibly fast, hundreds of times per second. The ECU is receiving signals from the instruments and sending signals back to them all at once.

How can I change my face gauge?

You would need a replacement face gauge that already has all the needed electronics built-in, then remove the old one and replace it with the new one. Unfortunately, in most cases, it's a bit more complicated than that.

If you try this, you will most likely have to deal with multiple issues that are very difficult to fix.

For this reason we recommend that you work with a company like ISS Automotive if you are not sure how to do this on your own.

What is a full digital instrument cluster?

A full digital instrument cluster is a type of instrument cluster that uses digital displays instead of analog gauges.

Digital instrument clusters have many advantages over analog ones. For one, they can be much more customizable. You can change the look of the gauges, the colors, and even add animations.

Digital instrument clusters can also be much more informative than analog ones. For example, you can add a tachometer, a boost gauge, and a water temperature gauge to a digital cluster that would be difficult to add to an analog one.

Another advantage of digital instrument clusters is that they can be much more accurate than analog ones. This is because digital clusters can use sensors to directly measure things like rpm, speed, and water temperature.

Digital instrument clusters are also much easier to install than analog ones. In most cases, all you need to do is remove the old cluster and plug in the new one.

What is the difference between a cluster swap and an aftermarket cluster?

A cluster swap is when you replace your entire instrument panel (stock cluster) with another one. For example, if you have a USDM cluster and you want to put it into a Japanese car, that's considered a cluster swap.

If your cluster is broken or faulty in any way, then you will have to do a cluster swap. There's no way around it - if your speedometer or fuel gauge is broken, then you have to replace the entire cluster.

In some rare cases, a car's original cluster is totally fine, but the odometer is broken. In this case, instead of doing a cluster swap, you can just replace the odometer in your current cluster.

Aftermarket clusters are all of the clusters that you can buy separately. For example, there is an aftermarket cluster for USDM cars and another one designed specifically for the Japanese market.

The only thing that makes an aftermarket cluster different from a stock one is the ability to buy it separately.

Can you reset oil pressure gauge?

Can you customize classic instruments?

Yes, you can customize classic instruments to some extent. For example, you can change the color of the needles or add a custom logo. Only problem is you will not be able to change the overall layout of the gauges.
