How to Reset GM Instrument Cluster [All You Need to Know]

GM Instrument Cluster

Not a simple process. It's better to work with an instrument cluster company if you need any programming or resets done. The reason is that it will be done correctly and then tested for performance which is important.

Steps to Reset:

  1. To begin, remove the headlight fuses from the 15A right and left side low headlights. You may do this by popping the hood and removing the headlight fuses from the fuse box. It's vital to verify your vehicle owner's handbook to ensure you locate the fuse box correctly.
  2. Finally, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the 0 or 1 position.
  3. On the car's instrument panel, look for the Reset/Sel knob and hold it down. This knob is usually near the fuel gauge on the panel.
  4. Continue to press the Reset/Sel knob and turn on the headlights.
  5. Turn on the car's ignition by turning the key to the "2" position or pressing the switch to II if you are not using a key.
  6. The instrument light should now come on, and if you haven't fastened your seatbelt, you should hear the warning alarm.
  7. Press the Reset/Sel knob to turn the headlights on and off for 5 seconds.
  8. As soon as you have counted to five, turn off the Reset/Sel knob. You'll need to press the same Reset/Sel button three times in a row next.
  9. Turn off the ignition or drive the car over 15 mph to complete the instrument cluster reset. After that, reconnect the headlight fuses in the underhood fuse box when you're done.

Do you have to reprogram an instrument cluster?

You will need a computer system that connects to the main large port of the instrument cluster. You will also need the GM & Chevy VIN programming tool. You will need to pay GM & Chevy about $50 for each cluster in order to VIN program the cluster. After programming, it's recommended that you have a way to fully test the cluster. At ISS Automotive we have advanced systems in order to program each and every cluster.

As you can see the cost is not cheap. It's better to work with a replacement or repair shop that has all these computers and testing systems in place. Plus you really will want someone with experience to do all this for you. ISS Automotive has been doing this for about 30 years.
