    Instrument Cluster Replacement FAQs

How To Remove The Instrument Cluster

The instrument cluster assembly is usually held in place by a plastic bezel that connects it to the dashboard. The removal process should start with locating all the screws holding the bezel (below the dash and around the bezel) and removing them. Once the bezel is gone, you will have easy access to the instrument cluster, which should be held with a couple of extra screws. However, before completely removing the cluster, be sure to detach all wires and cables without damaging the connectors. Of course, as always, when you are dealing with a car’s electronic components, disconnect the battery just to be safe.

How To Install An Instrument Cluster

In order to install your instrument cluster back, you must follow the reverse procedure. Locate the wires and cables and ensure they are appropriately connected before placing the cluster in the dash. Secure the cluster with screws and then install the plastic bezel. Connect the car battery and test the instrument cluster, its responsiveness, features, and accuracy.

Many people are concerned about what this means for the mileage shown on the odometer. We talk more about that on the ISS Automotive blog.

How To Fix An Instrument Cluster

Numerous things could go wrong with your instrument cluster. From simple things like failing light bulbs to lose speedometer cables. However, the first thing you should do before you start tearing down your dashboard is to determine the problem clearly. Sometimes, if you believe that your fuel gauge is broken, it could be a faulty sending unit in your tank. Some fixes are easy, like replacing cables or bulbs, but most are very complicated and require special tools and expertise.

How To Change An Instrument Cluster Light Bulb

Failing light bulbs is one of the most annoying instrument cluster problems.Fortunately, it is one of the easiest to fix. Most clusters use typical small bulbs which can be obtained in every parts store. In order to change them, you need to remove the cluster following the procedure.

Once the cluster is detached from the vehicle, inspect the backside and notice one or a few (depending on the model) bulb sockets. Remove the bulb, replace it with the new one, and install the cluster back into the dash. On some models, you will need to open the backside of the cluster to gain access to the bulbs. If this is the case with your vehicle, be sure to use a plastic pry tool. Gently apply the pressure, being careful to not damage the plastic housing of the cluster or sockets. This could be the difference between cheaply repairing the old instrument cluster yourself or ordering a new one.
