FAQ

2002 to 2006 GMC envoy instrument cluster

Why is my dash cluster not working?

These 2002 to 2006 Envoy instrument clusters fail because the circuit board on these particular models is defective.

The symptoms reported are:

  • Power/redundant airbag
  • ABS light failing
  • Service 4 wheel drive lights are on all the time
  • Fuel not reading correctly
  • Speedometer not showing accurate speed
  • Dead or flickering light bulbs
  • Needle on gauge hanging down and broken
  • Vehicle battery keeps draining
  • Service engine soon light is flashing or stays on
  • Gauges do not work.
  • Speedometer, tachometer, oil pressure, and voltmeter do not work.
  • Seatbelt light on the cluster sometimes works and at other times does not. The cluster on this model has no power.

The only way to fix it is to remove the circuit board and replace all of the components that are mounted on it.

ISS Automotive offers a 100% Lifetime Warranty because of our high-quality parts and clusters.

What causes the instrument cluster to stop working?

The circuit board is the most likely cause, but it could be one of the other printed circuit boards. Sometimes the wire harness just gets disconnected. It is very common for the wire harnesses to separate soon after unplugging them. Repair service may say it needs a new instrument cluster, but the wire harnesses are disconnected or loose. Some other models have had bad printed circuit boards which may be a factor. You can get a new circuit board from GM or a good used one from a junkyard. A complete rebuild may fix it. That is the best bet if you get a used one. The new circuit board cost $$$ and labor to replace.

The oil pressure sending unit does not work and is causing this problem. The repair service says the instrument cluster needs to be replaced, but they are wrong. The problem is with the oil pressure or check engine light circuit failure. There is no way for the computer to know these circuits are not working, so it defaults to the oil pressure gauge setting. Repair service won't find this problem by checking the fuses because all of them are good, but these circuits are not working.

What would cause the speedometer to stop working?

The speedometer cluster itself may need to be replaced. The printed circuit board could also be the problem. The fuel gauge may be faulty and need to be replaced. Instrument clusters have been known to have shorted sending units. The speedometer itself is a good possibility as well. New stepper motors or printed circuit boards could be the problem.

The printed circuit board has its own computer chip that keeps track of the readings to make sure they are accurate. If you have a bad speedometer or any other gauge, the circuit board may need to be replaced. Replacing the circuit board does not necessarily mean replacing all of the other components on it as well. If you just need new gauges, they can be purchased and installed separately. Some people will contact GM and buy them that way because GM dealerships charge a lot for the complete new unit.

Can a blown fuse cause the speedometer not to work?

A blown fuse would prevent the speedometer from working, but it would also disable the entire cluster. The gauge cluster has several warning lights controlling various items. These are fed by separate circuits so they may still work even though the speedometer fails. New stepper motors, printed circuit boards, or other components could also be the problem. Please research your car before you attempt to do this repair yourself. Call a repair service if you are not sure. They may not mind helping you, but they will probably charge an hourly rate for it.

You can buy a new printed circuit board, but it is probably easier to get one from a junkyard for less money. A used instrument cluster may cost $60 or so, and you can test it before buying to see if it works. Do not buy one from a dealer as they will want too much money for it. Some repair services will let you use their machine to test it.

How do you know if your dash cluster is bad?

If your car is experiencing any of the symptoms listed above that were reported by our customers, then it's very likely that you have a faulty instrument cluster. Your gauge cluster may not show any power to it or just won't turn on at all. Your cluster may also do strange things such as display random characters, fail to light up, freeze on certain screens even though the vehicle is off, and show different readings each time you turn the ignition on. These are all indicators that your cluster is bad and needs to be replaced. A complete rebuild kit costs under $100 and includes a complete set of new components such as stepper motors, circuit boards, buttons, LEDs, and LED bulbs.

All you have to do is replace the parts, plug them in and your instrument cluster should be working like new again. This is a very simple process that can be done by just about anyone. The gauge cluster should only take about an hour to fix at most. Once you have fixed your gauge cluster, it should work perfectly again for another 10 years!

A new instrument panel will cost over $400 but you can buy all the parts you need to repair yours for under $100. Repairing the cluster yourself will save you a lot of time and money.

How do I remove the instrument cluster on a 2005 GMC Envoy?

To remove the instrument cluster you need to pull back the rubber boot that is around the outside of the cluster. Under this rubber boot are two Torx T30 screws, remove them and then pull the cluster out. Disconnect all of the wiring harnesses to completely remove the instrument cluster. Repair service will use their machine to test the circuit board to see if it's bad or not. You can manually test this yourself with a voltmeter in most cases. Repair center will want to charge you around $150 to do this for you or more depending on the problem. You can buy a new printed circuit board yourself for around $100 and then test it before you fit it into the cluster surround. You can use our repair guide to help you fit the new board. Most cars have the same cluster layout so there is no need to remove each part separately. You may need to remove other parts such as the trip unit or the hazard warning switch for example.

Where is the fuse for the instrument cluster?

The fuse for the instrument cluster is located under the hood of the car on the left-hand side. The gauge cluster will then need to be removed and the fuse will be labeled "Instrument Cluster". Individual gauges may have their own fuse, but the instrument cluster does not. Be careful when removing each individual fuse to make sure you know which one goes where afterward. Check your warranty before paying for any repairs to see if the warranty covers this problem. Service will want to charge around $100 or more for this repair. Shop rates are usually cheaper than dealer rates, but they may not cover the warranty either.

How do I reset my instrument cluster speedometer?

The speedometer on your instrument cluster can be reset by pushing the trip button located at the top of the cluster. Hold down this button for 5 seconds to get the speedometer to reset. The ignition switch needs to be in the on position for this to work. The gas gauge may also need to be reset, so you will need to put new fuel in your tank. A repair service can do this for you if your car is out of warranty. They do a great job and may even have a used instrument cluster in stock for much less. Same day turnaround and they will also fix the problem if it turns out to be a fuse or relay.

Repairing your own gauge cluster is not hard and it can save you a lot of money. You can buy the parts you need online and we have a great selection of replacement clusters for all popular cars and trucks. Get yours today to get your vehicle back on the road as soon as possible.

All indicators that your cluster is bad and needs to be replaced:

  • Speedometer does not work or jumps around.
  • Gas gauge reads incorrectly. (Example: the needle may stay on full for a long time.)
  • Odometer and other gauges do not work.
  • Cluster lights up but the needles are not moving. There is no response from the cluster when buttons are pushed.
  • The needle or needles fluctuate rapidly and don't stay steady on a measurement.

It's important to know that the earlier you fix this problem the better because your cluster will continue to get worse as time goes by. This may cause more damage and become larger, which could end up costing you many hundreds of dollars down the road.

How much does it cost to fix the instrument cluster?

A 2005 GMC Envoy instrument cluster repair starts at $250. A nominal fee may apply if you choose to recycle your old instrument cluster. Replacement instrument cluster units are available from GM dealers. It has a limited lifetime warranty and excellent service. They do a great job of matching the original equipment for this purpose. A new instrument cluster has a lifetime warranty and is very competitively priced. As with most industries, they offer an exchange program that guarantees you the same item back if it fails within 30 days. If you simply can not afford to get your instrument cluster replaced, then consider buying a used one that has already been repaired. It's often the same price as repair service and offers peace of mind because you know it has already been fixed. A used instrument cluster also has a lifetime warranty and the same policy applies to an exchange.

What are the symptoms of a bad instrument cluster?

A bad instrument cluster will cause all or some of the following symptoms: Power/redundant airbag, ABS, and service 4-wheel drive lights are on all the time. Service engine soon light is flashing or stays on. Gauges do not work. The speedometer, tachometer, oil pressure, and voltmeter do not work. The seatbelt light on the cluster sometimes works and at other times does not. Check engine light is on. The clock keeps losing time or does not work at all. The coolant temperature gauge does not work, the transmission temperature gauge does not work, or the fuel gauge does not work. These are just a few of the problems that I have seen over the years caused by bad instrument clusters. This is not a complete list and you may notice other problems as well.

Can you reset the instrument cluster?

Yes, you can reset your instrument cluster. Push the trip button located at the top of the cluster and hold it down for 5 seconds to reset the speedometer. Check your warranty before proceeding with any repairs. Repair service would be a good place to start. They will do a great job and can usually get you fixed up the same day. If you have decided that you want to get it fixed yourself, then consider buying a used instrument cluster. It's often the same price as having the repair service do it for you and has a 30-day warranty. You can also have them fix the problem for you if it turns out to be a fuse or relay. A complete rebuild is also an option for this purpose. The cost of a rebuild starts at $450. This is often about the same price as buying a used instrument cluster, but there are no warranty restrictions with this service. They will do everything they can to fix your problem and you know it's fixed when they finish doing their repair work. A limited lifetime warranty applies to all instrument clusters that are exchanged at this service center.

What module controls the instrument cluster?

The instrument cluster is controlled by a printed circuit board. A code reader should be used to get a fault code from the instrument cluster so that you have an idea of what is causing your problem. If the repair service has a used instrument cluster in stock, it may be less expensive to have them do the repair. They are very competitively priced and have a 1-year warranty. If you are experienced do it yourself, then consider buying a used instrument cluster that has already been repaired. It's often the same price as having the repair service fix it for you and you have 30 days to test it out. A GMC envoy instrument cluster is very easy to change. Only 3 screws hold the cluster in place and it's a matter of swapping out the old one with a new or used one. These are very reliable vehicles and the instrument cluster is one of the most failure-prone parts of this model. You can buy a used GMC envoy instrument cluster for around $80-$100. The failure rate is not high at all with these clusters, but when they do go out, you know it's time to get it fixed because your gauges quit working and the red service 4-wheel drive light starts flashing.

What are the lights on the instrument cluster?

There are a few lights on the instrument cluster.

  • When you first turn your car on, the clock and the seatbelt light will come on.
  • The oil pressure light is when the engine is too hot.
  • The SES light is when you have a problem with your secondary ignition system.
  • The ABS light is on when the anti-lock brake system has failed.
  • There are a bunch more, but you get the idea.

The service engine soon light will stay on until the problem is fixed. It's like a check engine light. Incorrect readings in the instrument cluster can be caused by bad ground. A bad connection or dirty connector will cause incorrect readings in your instrument cluster, so always check this first before you assume that it's a problem with the instrument cluster. If you do suspect that there is a problem with the instrument cluster, then try swapping out the bulbs one at a time to see if the light goes out. If it does, then you know that the bulb is bad and you need to replace it. The instrument cluster will not have a problem with a bad connection going from the car to the bulb, so even though there is corrosion on a wire or a connector causes a faulty reading in your instrument cluster, this doesn't cause problems with your GMC envoy instrument cluster. If it's time to replace the instrument cluster, then you might as well replace it with a used one from a salvage yard.

Can you change the instrument panel lights?

If the instrument panel lights go out, you can either change the light bulbs or replace the entire cluster. If a single bulb goes out, you can change just that bulb. Replacement bulbs are sold at most auto parts stores. Just make sure you disconnect the battery first. You can also replace the entire instrument panel when all of the lights go out. A used instrument panel is often the same price as having it repaired by a dealer service department. Be sure to check your warranty before you decide on any repairs.
