FAQ

2003 2004 2005 2006 GMC Yukon instrument cluster

How do you know if your dash cluster is bad?

If the "Check Engine Soon" indicator is lit, it may be an indication that there is a malfunction in the instrument cluster. The only way to determine if the problem is with the instrument cluster or another component in the vehicle is to have your vehicle checked by a professional. The circuit board in the instrument cluster can be tested for proper output. If there is a failure in one of these circuits, the digital display will not function correctly.

Why is my dash cluster not working?

If the instrument cluster is not working, it may be a result of one or more problems. A malfunctioning component in the vehicle could cause the instrument cluster to not work properly. There may be a burned-out bulb or the connection to the instrument cluster may be loose or corroded. The vehicle's computer may also be malfunctioning. Check the transmission temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, voltage gauge, and engine temperature gauge in your instrument cluster. If any one of these gauges does not work, there may be a problem with the controller for that particular gauge. Take your vehicle to a dealer or mechanic to have it checked.

Can I drive my truck without the instrument cluster?

If the instrument cluster is not working, you can still drive your vehicle. This will not affect the way the vehicle drives or responds. You should be aware that you will not have important information displayed to help keep you safe, however. Engine hours, speed, outside temperature, and fuel range are all displayed on the instrument cluster. You will need to rely on your vehicle's odometer to approximate your speed. The trip odometer will not work if the instrument cluster is malfunctioning. If you suspect your instrument cluster is no longer functioning properly, contact a mechanic. The problem could be a loose or corroded connection, a burned-out bulb, or a faulty controller.

Can I replace my instrument cluster?

Yes. If the instrument cluster is not working properly, you can get a replacement from your GMC dealership or auto repair shop. Carefully follow the instructions given by the technician to ensure that your instrument cluster works properly. Replacement instrument cluster panels are available for most, but not all, makes and models of GMC vehicles. If you have a 1990-1999 GMC Jimmy or Envoy, you can replace the instrument cluster yourself. A video is available to show you where the fuse box and electrical connectors are located for this model.

How do you reset the instrument cluster on a 2003 GMC Sierra?

GMC recommends that the instrument cluster be reset when replacing the battery, changing any bulbs or fuses in the instrument panel cluster, or if the vehicle experiences an electrical "surge." To do this, turn the ignition key on but leave it in the OFF position. Press and hold the trip odometer reset button until the display begins to flash, then release it. Press and hold the trip odometer reset button a second time for approximately five seconds. The display will flash, then go blank for about three seconds before returning to normal operation. Using this method, all warning indicator lights (SAE, Oil Pressure, Temperature) will be reset to the "ON" position.

How much does it cost to replace the instrument cluster?

There is no set price for replacing the instrument cluster as it varies, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. The average cost that you should expect to pay is $300. Exchange service - where the faulty instrument cluster is taken off and replaced with a new one - costs an average of $150. The labor cost to install the new instrument cluster is approximately $150. Your gauge cluster will also be tested to make sure it is operating properly and that the replacement has fixed the problem. The total cost for this service is approximately $65. You can also choose an exchange service option. This is where the faulty instrument cluster is tested and then refurbished to eliminate future problems. It costs approximately $350.

Do instrument clusters need to be programmed?

Yes. The instrument cluster needs to be programmed to the vehicle when it is replaced by re-programming it with the software of the new one. The core charge is the deposit paid to GMC for the old instrument cluster. This charge is refunded when you return a working used part to a dealer or supplier. The charge is usually around $50 and varies depending on the model and make of your GMC vehicle. Gauge cluster programming can be done by you or a GMC dealer.

How do I reset my GM gauge cluster needles?

You should reset the trip odometer and total miles driven when replacing the battery, changing any bulbs or fuses in the instrument cluster, or if the vehicle experiences an electrical "surge."

Your gauge cluster is also reset to the "ON" position when you press and hold the trip odometer reset button for five seconds. To reset the cluster yourself, turn on your vehicle's headlamps then press the trip odometer reset button until the display begins to flash, then release it. Press the button again within five seconds of the first press and hold until the display flashes again. After a few seconds, the display will return to normal operation.

How do I reset my Chevy instrument cluster?

To reset the odometer on a Chevy, you must press and hold the trip reset button until the display begins to flash. Then release it and press and hold the reset button a second time for five seconds. The display will flash and then go blank for about three seconds before returning to normal operation. The cluster will also need to be reset when replacing the battery, changing any bulbs or fuses in the panel, or if it experiences an electrical "surge."

You can also do it yourself by turning on your vehicle's headlamps then pressing the trip odometer reset button until the display begins to flash, then release it. Press the button again within five seconds of the first press and hold until the display flashes again. After a few seconds, the display will return to normal operation.

How do you know if a cluster is bad?

The first thing to do is go ahead and replace the bulbs. If the problem isn't fixed, then it's likely something inside the cluster that's gone bad. If one of the bulbs is out, you should be able to easily replace it without having to go inside the cluster. If all of the bulbs are working and there's still an issue, then you'll need to replace the cluster. The circuit board usually needs to be replaced in this case.

The core charge is the deposit paid to GMC for the old instrument cluster. This charge is refunded when you return a working used part to a dealer or supplier. The charge is usually around $50 and varies depending on the model and make of your GMC vehicle.

How do I remove the instrument cluster from the 2003 GMC Sierra?

There are only a few screws holding it in. Generally there are 4 to 6 total depending on the year. First place your parking brake on and then disconnect your battery. It's important to leave the battery disconnected for about 5 to 10 min. Then adjust the steering wheel down so that you can slowly remove the dash trim.

After the trim is removed then the process is generally easy to remove the screws holding in the cluster. Now disconnect the main cable from the cluster.

Its very important that you make sure that no dirt is getting into the pins when connecting the new cluster back in.

There are also clips on the top and bottom of this panel, two on each side. This is why it's difficult to repair these things because you may break your panel when removing it.

Can you drive with a bad cluster?

No, you cannot drive the vehicle unless it is in safe operating condition. The instrument cluster (dashboard) can provide many warnings to help keep you and your passengers safe. The stepper motors inside the instrument cluster can be prevented from moving the needles if their associated switches fail. The most common failure is the stepper motor that moves the speedometer needle. This motor is also the most common reason for clusters that read incorrectly or show "Check Gauges". You can test the motor with an ohmmeter and then visually inspect it for any damage. If you find either of these problems, replace the part as soon as possible.

How do I reset my GM instrument cluster?

To reset the image projection of your GM instrument cluster, you must press and hold the trip odometer button for five seconds. Keep in mind this process will not reset your speedometer, but only the image projection of the cluster. The GM instrument cluster uses a slide switch to engage or disengage the trip odometer and check the engine. To use this feature, slide the switch up for on or down for off. The circuit board in the instrument cluster also has fuses that can lose contact or fail. If you notice that one is blown, it will need to be replaced. Replace it as soon as possible to avoid further damage and inconvenient issues with your vehicle's instrument cluster.
